Rio Mesa’s athletic teams are flexing their muscles during the fall season in the newly-configured Pacific View League. Currently, no Spartan team is ranked lower than second place in the PVL, and several have already sewn up League Championships!
The Girls’ Tennis wrapped up a League title last week with a spotless 8-0 record. Coach Ron Edwards’ netters, led by singles player Dominique Derse and the doubles team of Alexandra Alamillo and Allison Mitsuuchi, will host the first round of the CIF Playoffs on Nov. 3 vs. an opponent to be determined.
The Girls’ Golf team has been equally successful, winning the League title with an undefeated record as well. Senior Grace Stephenson has been the team’s low medalist all year long, averaging under 40 for nine holes and winning the 18-hole League Individual Championship with a 79, and senior Kennedy Boldrin has been a consistent #2 player on coach Tod Deardorff’s squad.
Coach Rick Torres’ Girls’ Cross-Country team is currently sitting in first place with one cluster meet remaining and is poised to grab the PVL title on Nov. 6 on the College Park course in Oxnard. The teams’ top 5 runners include Auburn Griffith, Devyn Weisenberger, Lauren Pinsak, Molly Garcia and Anna Schneider.
On the Boys’ side, our Water Polo squad, coached by Derrick Timmons, is not only 6-0 in League competition, but is also ranked #1 in CIF Division 7! With a PVL title all but locked up, the Spartans have also won the Oxnard Tournament and defeated perennial power Royal HS 14-13 in overtime. Stellar play by Jake Ehrhardt, Peyton Collins, Reece Koe and Robert Cervantes have put the team in a position to contend for the program’s 2nd CIF title.
Sitting in second place in the PVL at present are Girls’ Volleyball and Boys’ Cross-Country, and our Football team can finish no worse than second (with a shot at the co-Championship) with a victory over Pacifica on Oct. 30. Cecelia Lucas and Maeve Hanafin have been standouts in Volleyball, Jimmy FitzGerald, Vinny Perillo and DJ Torres are leaders in Cross-Country, and Cameron Wrout, Michael Kytlica and Jonathan Lennard are among the standouts on the gridiron.
As we move forward into the CIF Playoffs, the fall athletic season continues to be one of the most memorable in recent history. Go Spartans!
